It’s said, that at some point in our life, we all will be affected by cancer one way or another…..whether it’s you or someone you know.
What is cancer exactly? According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If the spread is not controlled, it can result in death.
The facts and figures about cancer are scary. The ACS estimates about 1,437,180 new cancer cases are to be diagnosed by the end of this year. It’s expected that by the end of this year 565,650 people will die from cancer. When you look at the numbers, it also seems that with the exception of some cancers, men are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease.
These statistics are alarming. When you break it down by state, the ACS estimates over 11 thousand Nevadans will be diagnosed with cancer. Over one thousand will be cases of breast cancer, 370 will be leukemia, nearly two thousand will be skin cancer cases, and another two thousand will be prostate cancer, just to name a few. To put this in perspective for you though, the state’s population at last census (2000) was at nearly two million people. That’s roughly 18 percent of Nevadans who will be diagnosed with cancer this year.
The good news is survival rates are going up, and more and more research is being done. Our next show is dedicated to these survivors and in honor of those who lost their lives to this devastating disease.
Please feel free to share your story. If you’re going through cancer and just need a place to vent, feel free to do so here. Just know you’re not alone.
